Interviewer: It sounds like when you travel you spend most of your time in your hotel room reading.
Kenzaburo Oe: Yes, that’s right. I do some sightseeing, but I have no interest in good food. I like drinking, but I don’t like going to bars because I get in fights.
Interviewer: What do you get in fights about?
Kenzaburo Oe: In Japan at least, whenever I come across an intellectual with a tendency toward emperor worship I get angry. My response to this person is inevitably to start annoying him and then the fighting begins. Of course, fights only happen after I’ve had too much to drink.
